Third Place Design Representation of “Mangan Ora Mangan Ngumpul” in a Settlement along Kali Code

The exploration of the third-place concept has emerged as an increasingly crucial and dynamic subject, demanding a thorough examination within diverse cultural contexts. The Yogyakarta community’s philosophy of “mangan ora mangan ngumpul” is intricately linked to the characteristics of the third place, making a nuanced comprehension within this framework immensely pertinent. This research endeavor is devised to formulate a third place that functions as a communal hub for residents along the Kali Code riverbank, particularly in the Cokrodiningratan village of Yogyakarta. The design strategy involves interpreting spatial concepts based on the philosophy of “mangan ora mangan ngumpul” – a call to gather regardless of whether one is eating or not. The objective is to balance commercial imperatives with the preservation of the Kali Code community’s authenticity and distinctive traits.

The design process strives to combine Oldenburg’s third place theory with the “mangan ora mangan ngumpul” philosophy. Methodologies include an in-depth review of relevant literature, analysis of precedents, and a reinterpretation of the philosophy’s essence through on-site observations. These observations focus on portraying activities associated with ‘ngumpul’ within the village community along the Kali Code. The findings and narratives surrounding ‘ngumpul’ activities serve as the foundation for establishing criteria in the third place’s design. Eight key criteria are delineated, encompassing elements like Panggonan ing Code (place in Code), Saben Wong ing Code (everyone in Code), Cerito ing Code (stories in Code), Buka sak Lawase ing Code (24/7 in Code), Aku Wong Code (I am Code), Ojo Neko-Neko (a low profile), Dolanan ing Code (play in Code), and Srawung ing Code (harmony in Code). These criteria function as guiding principles throughout the design process.

This research contributes to synthesizing the principles of Oldenburg’s third place from Western cultures with those of Eastern cultures, specifically the ‘ngumpul’ culture along the Kali Code in Yogyakarta, grounded in the “mangan ora mangan ngumpul” philosophy.
